Experiences in the Civilian Conservation Corps; employment as a machinist in south Florida, 1941-42; entry into the Marine Corps, February, 1943; boot camp experiences at Parris Island, South Carolina; training with 40-millimeter antiaircraft guns, New River, North Carolina; assignment to the 8th Antiaircraft Battalion; stationing at Abemama, 1943-44; Japanese air raids at Abemama; reassignment to Kauai and preparations for the invasion of Okinawa, 1944; invasion of Okinawa, April, 1945; Japanese kamikazes; combat around Sugar Loaf Hill on Okinawa; typhoons and torrential rains; postwar adjustments to civilian life.
